•  Many trees will be found to exhibit signs of internal decay as a result of fungal activity. This does not necessarily mean that the tree is dying, or indeed dangerous. It does mean that it will be necessary to locate the extent of the decayed wood, and monitor its progress over the remaining life of the tree, in order that the safety of persons or property is duly accounted for

•  Our main tool in decay detection is the 'Resistograph 400'. This is basically a cordless drill with a very fine drill bit, which enters the wood of the suspect part of the tree and proceeds to measure the electrical power required to advance the drill. This resistance is simultaneously plotted on a graph, and corresponds to the area of weakened wood. It can be used on major roots, the main stem or large limbs in the crown of a tree.

•  Information gained in this way can help to arrive at a Risk Assessment for that particular tree. Depending on the likely target (should the tree fail), appropriate recommendations can then be made as regards future management and possible remedial works

•  In some cases it will be necessary to use a more detailed method of diagnosis, the 'Sonic Tomograph' is a relatively new piece of equipment which, although costly, produces an unrivalled level of information. This is generally used on trees which are of high amenity value and/or are in very public situations. We have been operating the Picus Sonic Tomograph since May 2004 and offer a competetive visiting service to other consultants, contractors and local authorities. Contact us for further information.
